Luke 1:46-49 – “And Mary said, “My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has had regard for the humble state of his bondslave; for the Mighty One has done great things for me;”

These were Mary’s words as she exclaimed her amazement with God choosing to bless her to be the mother of Jesus. Mary had a deep sense of humility. One might think it was because she was from the insignificant village of Nazareth, a town off the beaten path. In actuality, it had everything to do with her spiritual character.

Mary referred to Jesus as her Savior, because she was a sinner and needed a Savior just like you and me! Like all believers, Mary had a lofty view of the Lord and a lowly view of herself. Such humility is what God blesses.

Mary viewed herself as a slave to Christ, not the exalted, quasi-deified queen of heaven that some have imagined her to be. She is the first person in the N.T. to identify herself as the Lord’s ‘slave’.

Mary was joyful and grateful because of the mercy that God extended to her. Like Mary, we should be a humble bondslave to Christ and take joy in being a recipient of his grace!
