Matthew 27:51 – “And behold the veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” |
Have you ever thought of the significance of the tearing of the veil? This is recorded immediately after Jesus spoke His last words and died.
Inside the tabernacle, there was a veil (curtain) that led to the room called the ‘holy of holies.’ This is where God dwelt in a symbolic presence. It could only be entered thru once a year by the high priest, in order for him to offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. Nobody else was EVER allowed in this room. The priest actually had to wear a long belt of bells so they could be pulled out in case of his death inside this room.
When Christ gave up His spirit, it was like God reached down from heaven, took hold of this extremely thick curtain and ripped it open, from top to bottom. This signifies that we now have direct access to God without having to go through any human priest. No more priests needed to offer sacrifices on our behalf.
There is no longer anything between God and us. You and I can speak directly to Him. We have Jesus to thank for that!
