Psalm 59:16 – “In the morning I will sing of your love.”

I remember as a little girl waking up early on spring mornings to the intoxicating fragrance of Lily of the Valley flowers. My parents had a small flower garden outside my bedroom. I loved sleeping with my window open a tiny bit, and if the breeze was just right, the dainty scent could slip into my room as the sun was rising. When I peeked outside, I could see dew glistening on the tiny white bells that covered delicate green stalks.

My mother also had a bird house in the flower bed that was specifically for wrens (her favorite birds). One morning I awoke to the excited chirping of a pair of wrens and the delicious scent of the lilies floating on the gentle spring breeze. I laid in my bed and took it all in – and marveled at the variety of nature that was waking up with me this new day.

Soon I was able to recognize other birds and then sounds of the farm animals or our dog barking. I could hear my parents talking softly at the other end of the house – mom cooking breakfast and dad preparing to go to work. I heard a train off in the distance and an occasional car that rattled across the bridge over the creek that ran beside our farm. My cat hopped onto my bed and then up onto the windowsill where he could keep an eye on the birds flying back and forth. The sights, the sounds, the smells of an early Iowa spring morning – not much was better.

In today’s verse, David tells of singing to God in the morning. We have so much to sing about and to be thankful for! We are to sing not just for the beauty of nature, but also in thanks for his love and care for us.

Prayer: Lord, I am in awe of all that you have created, and the amazing variety of sights and sounds and scents you provide for us. All of nature sings to you – help me to see your beauty each day, and to share your love with others. Amen.
