Matthew 13:31-32 – “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” |
In 1963, a physicist named Edward Lorenz described a phenomenon he believed existed. The flap of the wing of a single butterfly could move a tiny amount of air. That air would then interact with other molecules in the air. As each molecule accumulated, it could stir air over warm oceans into a hurricane on the other side of the planet. His fellow scientists laughed him into silence. Then, thirty years later, accumulated research confirmed Lorenz’ theory. It is called The Law of Sensitive Dependence Upon Initial Conditions. Others have named it “the Butterfly Effect.”
Jesus described it differently. “He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31–32, NIV)
One seed…planted…changes everything. The principle is clear. The smallest actions produce grand effects for God and his kingdom. That central idea should carry us through the day. Everything we do is important. Nothing is insignificant. It matters.
What small action can you take today to change your life? Others? Your circumstances. Flap a wing and see what happens.
