Matthew 6:25-27 – “25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? 27 And which of you by worrying can add a single day to his life’s span?” |
It’s 3:00 in the morning, and something happens to many. Minds start tumbling with the “what-ifs”.
What if I get laid off?
What if I get cancer?
What if I don’t get into the college I want?
What if I have a car wreck?
And this list opens the eye and weighs the heart.
Lucas LaFreniere listens to people talk about their thoughts. He has them record their worries and what caused them distress. Much of this doesn’t merely interrupt sleep. It weighs down the waking hours. He says that over 90% of what people fret over never comes true.
He says chronic worriers find their lives tied in knots over never-mentioned events. They cannot live for today for the outsized fear of tomorrow.
Jesus knew that. He saw mothers and fathers twisted in spiritual knots over food and clothes before they needed them. Yet, he points out that birds and flowers have none of these concerns.
Instead of worrying, respond to God as much as flowers and birds. Your phantom worries will subside as you witness God’s care.
