My father’s cousin Jenny was an accomplished painter whose artwork was well-received in the local community. She also played piano at church and had a quiet, beautifully caring spirit. When she was in her 40’s she started losing her eyesight and doctors were unable to help her. Before long, she was totally blind and forced to put her paint brushes away.
For about 20 years she was in complete darkness, but amazingly was able to continue playing piano. She lived with her sister who provided total care for her. But her faith in God never wavered, despite the loss of her artistic dreams. One day an eye surgeon approached her with an experimental procedure that he hoped would restore partial vision in one of her eyes. He felt this was her last chance – if this failed, he had nothing further to offer her. “I trust God, whatever happens,” she told him as she was wheeled into the operating room. Much to everyone’s delight, 80% vision was restored in her left eye! She could see again! Sunrises, the changes in her surroundings and even her own reflection in the mirror – she could see it all! The very first thing she did was pick up a paintbrush and soon she was painting beautiful pictures for each of us in the family.
Just as Jenny’s physical eyesight was restored, God wants the eyes of our hearts to be open to all the wonderful things he does for us. He doesn’t want us walking around blind to the beauty of this world or to the hope of an eternity spent with him in heaven. Take time each day to thank him for all his provisions to you: both in the past and in the future as well.
Prayer: Open my eyes, Lord, to all the wonderful things you do for me and how your provision is all I need. Thank you for your love, and for the hope of heaven and an eternity with you. Amen
