Birthdays were always a fairly big deal in my family. While there was not a lot of money for parties or expensive gifts, we were made to feel special on our special day. Mom would let us decide what kind of cake we wanted (mine was usually orange with orange frosting) and what to have for dinner, within reason of course. We sang, blew out candles, and the birthday person was the center of attention, at least for a little while. One year my younger brother got two cool firetrucks AND a xylophone, which the rest of us were a bit jealous about. But our parents did their best to focus on us and provide what they could.
Our scripture tells us that it is God who numbers our days and adds just the right amount to our lives. We have no idea when we celebrate this year if there will be 10 more birthdays in the future, or 20, or only two. What we do know, however, is that we are to live each year with love, life, and laughter. Try not to focus on the gift you did not receive (or be jealous of someone else’s gifts) but learn to take each day as a gift from God to be used for his glory.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for birthdays. Thank you that you know the day we arrived and the day we are to leave to be with you in heaven. Help us to make the most of our time here on earth. Amen
