Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” |
Is there anything more soothing or beautiful than the glow of a candle? The warmth of its flame creates light and dispels darkness. A single candle’s spark can illuminate vast areas, reaching into even the darkest places. Tradition holds that a single candle burning brightly in the window symbolizes a place of safety and rest for travelers on a cold winter night. But a candle can only be useful and serve as a welcoming beacon if it can be seen. Candles aren’t hidden away. They are placed where others can see and use the light they radiate.
As Christians, we are that candle, and we are the warm, inviting glow. We are that beacon by which God radiates His warmth and love. God is the light of the world. We are God’s representatives on earth, radiating the comfort and peace of God’s love and grace to all mankind.
Sometimes we may not feel like we have the strength or ability to shine but that’s when we have the comforting gift of being drawn to the glow of others. It’s a reciprocal thing. While some candles burn strongly and brightly, others may be dimmer for a time. God has created us to shine individually, not only to draw others to Him from the darkness but also to bless those around us. Through our candle’s flame, we are to be a reflection of God.
What an amazing God we serve! May our candles reflect God’s warmth, and boundless love and grace.
Dear God: What an amazing God you are! Thank you for candles. Thank you for their warmth, beauty and light. Please help each of us to burn brightly with Your love. We love you, Lord. Amen.
