Waiting – Romans 8:25

Romans 8:25 – “But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

Time is often a sparse commodity. From the time we awaken until lights out, between meeting deadlines and taking care of demands in our work and personal lives, there is never enough of it. For many of us, the exception is waiting for something we are hoping will happen. Whether it is a job promotion, healing for a family member or oneself, reconciliation of a frayed relationship, or a myriad of other difficult situations, time can appear to be at a standstill.

When in such situations, we have a couple of options. One is to forge ahead, taking matters into our own hands, regardless of the barriers. While this is appropriate in certain situations, today’s text invites us to consider the second option, which is to be patient. We can start this approach by pausing to pray for guidance and to consider what steps need to be taken. It also involves redirecting our time, energy and resources toward other goals and focuses. Choosing to be patient can help us live successfully in a juxtaposition of not losing hope while simultaneously being at peace with waiting.
