Good Shepherd – Isaiah 40:10-11

Isaiah 40:10-11 – “The Lord God is coming with power. He will use his power to rule all the people. He will bring rewards for his people. He will have their payment with him. Like a good shepherd, he takes care of his people. He gathers them like lambs in his arms. He holds them close, while their mothers walk beside him.”

Power and gentleness may seem to be rare companions, but not so with God. To understand the nature of God, we need to see the whole of his nature. He is the good shepherd who uses his strength and power to protect, and his arms of compassion to draw us to himself with tenderness. Each day we need to embrace the deep love, rich mercy and goodness of God.

In the same way we can rely on God’s strength and power to rescue, restore and protect us. The psalmist captured this truth when he wrote “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life” Psalm 23: 4-6.
