Recently I volunteered to develop and lead a community project. I felt this was a solid decision because it afforded me the opportunity to work in an area of interest, and it seemed to be a good fit based on my experience and skillset. After pouring considerable time, energy, and effort into the project, the decision was made to scrap it. This left me feeling a bit like those equines described in today’s passage, whose movement is stopped by a quick pull on the reins.
Initially I was confused about how such a good opportunity could evaporate so quickly. Slowly, I began realizing not every good opportunity is to be pursued, especially when it is approached in the way I had undertaken it. Although I had given it careful consideration, I had not really taken the time to seek the LORD’s counsel. I had offered up a quick prayer for discernment about taking the opportunity. However, I had not paused to sit quietly in His presence and listen to His answer. Having gone through this experience, I realized that pausing and seeking His wise and perfect counsel could prevent me from experiencing future “bit and bridle” endings to opportunities.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for your consistent willingness to instruct and teach us in the way we should go. Help us remember to always seek your wise and perfect counsel before making decisions. In the Strong name of Jesus, Amen.
