1 Thessalonians 5:8 – “But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”
The thought of belonging to the day is an attractive alternative to the darkness that continually tries to creep into our lives. Sources of darkness can include hearing news of armed conflicts across the globe or more regional atrocities such as human trafficking. They may also include experiencing personal challenges such as illness, financial concerns, or frayed relationships. Although the world offers an abundance of recommendations for finding hope among the darkness, the only infallible one is the helmet of salvation.
Understanding the helmet of salvation involves staying grounded in the knowledge Jesus is our Savior. Accepting Him as our Savior provides us with the assurance we will spend eternity with Him. It also gives us peace knowing regardless of what difficulties we face in the world, He will never leave or forsake us. Maintaining this inextinguishable source of hope can be challenging amid all the distractions assaulting us on an unrelenting basis. These include conflicting messages of what truth really is. However, choosing to continually renew our minds through daily reading and meditating on scriptures and praying frequently helps us stand solidly on the hope offered by the helmet of salvation.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so perfectly that you sent your Son Jesus to save us from our sins. Help us remain obedient to renewing our minds so we never lose sight of the hope offered through the helmet of salvation. In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
