| Luke 2:19 – “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.“ |
Friday, I was eating lunch in my car, windows rolled down, enjoying the warmth of the sun. I looked up to see a sweet scene. A mother duck and her six duckling following very close behind her. She was taking them to a nearby creek for a swim. I say a mother, an assumption based on how they were following. What makes that bond happen so fast? I think it is because she is their sole caregiver. They learn that all the good things in their life come at her “hand”. She feeds them. She lays the eggs that they hatch from. She protects them. And she schools them in survival and everything they need to know about life. She shows them how to swim and how to forage for their first meal. She shows them how to fly, what it looks like. And for her female ducklings, she shows them what it means to be a mother. I was in Tom Thumb getting some change. As I was entering, a young mother was leaving with her two young girls. I flashed back to the duck and her ducklings. Her girls followed her just like the ducklings. God’s creation is so wonderful. Women are naturally careful and risk averse. You don’t want to be reckless when you are a caregiver to a young helpless baby. I love to see a mother with her newborn baby. They talk so tenderly to them, hold them gently, handle them carefully, being cautious to never get in a dangerous situation with them or come close to dropping them. My 95 year old mother told me just yesterday “Be careful going home.” She still mothers me. Father in heaven, thank You for my mother and the mother of my children, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
