As I was thinking about this verse, my favorite hymn came to mind; “It Is Well With My Soul.” The story behind Horation Spafford writing the lyrics in 1873 is a testimonial to a man who WAS able to hold onto hope and faith during terrible times. His four year old son died, he lost his fortunes during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and more due to the 1873 economic downturn. And then his four daughters were killed when their ship sank while crossing the Atlantic. As he traveled to meet his grieving wife, he wrote the lyrics to the hymn. “When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say it is well, it is well, with my soul.” When you are buffeted by troubles, ask the Lord to give you hope and let you feel Him holding you up so that you can have peace in your soul.
