James 2:23 –  “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.”

Having friendships is one of life’s blessings. Centuries ago, Thomas Aquinas, an influential philosopher and theologian, probably said it best by stating “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.” Today’s text sheds light on a relationship going even deeper and sweeter then even our most prized earthly friendships. That is the one developed by communing with the LORD.

Friendship with the LORD starts by understanding several key aspects of who He is. First, over 2,000 years ago, He sent us Jesus to free us from the entanglement of sin and finality of death – just because He loves us. Another is His sovereignty over everything in the earth and heaven. Also, His goodness is evident in the ways He provides for us, protects us, and guides us. As we are told in James 1:17, “every good and perfect gift is from above.” There are many more aspects we could highlight. However, part of being in relationship with the LORD means continually learning more about Him. In addition, we should regularly praise Him for the aspects He has already revealed to us.

Additionally, a friendship with the LORD involves making Him our priority relationship. Thus, we need to recognize a relationship with Him takes precedence over even our closest friendships. We acknowledge the importance of our relationship by daily spending time in prayer, reading and meditating on scriptures, and pausing to listen for His soft and sweet voice. Participating in such actions can convey to Him that our friendship with Him is our priority.

Dear Heavenly Father, we are amazed that though you are the LORD of LORDS and King of Kings, you desire a relationship with each one of us. Help us remember our priority is remaining in relationship with you. In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
