Luminous or Lackluster? – Colossians 3:23-24

Luminous or Lackluster?

Colossians 3:23-24 – “Whatever you do, work with it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the LORD as reward. It is the LORD Christ you are serving.”

Whether at our jobs, taking care of our homes and families, or serving in voluntary roles in the community, we daily face a myriad of tasks to complete. With each task, we can perform it either in a lackluster or luminous way. Our approach, attitude, and actions can indicate negativity and doing the bare minimum, or they may reflect joy and striving for excellence.

There are numerous tasks which we are tempted to approach in a lackluster way. This can be because the tasks are mundane and dull and often are not noticed or appreciated by others. They may also be unpleasant and difficult because we lack the skill set, aptitude, time or desire needed to complete them.

However, today’s text indicates that a better way of performing a task is to do it in a luminous way. Remembering that every task provides an opportunity to serve the LORD incentivizes us to approach even the most difficult, thankless or boring ones with great joy and enthusiasm. Also, completing tasks in a luminous way can encourage others to want to become better acquainted with the God whom we are joyously serving
