Missteps and Resolution – 1 John 1:9

Missteps and Resolution

1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Typically, our first inclination after a misstep is to deflect our involvement and/or distance ourselves from it. This can be the case, whether the misstep involves spoken words or actions taken in anger, frustration, or haste.

However, a response of deflecting, trying to distance from and/or denying a misstep, will not bring resolution. It can also leave us experiencing shame and becoming enslaved to negative thinking. Today’s text suggests a much healthier alternative, which is admitting to have committed a misstep.

This confession starts with approaching the LORD with honesty and openness. Because of the LORD’s faithfulness, we can find forgiveness and freedom regardless of what our misstep is. This can lead to reconciliation with others, remedying difficult situations, and not being ensnared by past mistakes.
