Luke 22:19 – “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Our son Jackson asked how his grandmother was doing (Friday night)? I told him I was making a trip to see her in the morning (yesterday morning). Jackson: “How early?” Me: “Probably leave at 9.” Jackson: “I will go with you.” Me: “Great!” Normally he works every Saturday, but he had asked for the day off in order to be at his nephew (my grandson) Milo’s 4th birthday party.

We left for Fort Worth Saturday morning ahead of schedule, leaving our house about 8:45. My mother was in good spirits. We visited with her for over 4 hours, and then headed back when my brother Scott arrived.

On the way home, I turned on the radio to 92.5 FM, KZPS. They play classic rock music. The song currently playing when I switched it on was “No More Mr. Nice Guy”. I thought for a minute and finally remembered it was Alice Cooper, but did not say it. I wondered if Jackson would know the artist. Before I could ask, he told me “Alice Cooper.” I was impressed. Me: “Wow! I am surprised you knew that. The next song was “More Than A Feeling”. Me: “Do you know this one?” Jackson: “Don’t tell me.” In a few seconds, “Boston!” Me: “Yes sir! You know your stuff.”

Jackson: “I memorize the bar codes on things we sell at Calloway’s.” He has always had a good memory. He knows his plants from working around them all the time. He retains things he hears. That is good to be able to do. Whether easy or hard, remembering things is so important. Remembering birthdays, anniversaries, death anniversaries, graduations. I hear things at work and at church. Someone’s mother died. When I see the person, can I remember to say a kind word and give them a hug? I have to work at it. A friend tells me he is having surgery tomorrow at 10 AM. Can I text him at 9 AM to say an encouraging “I am praying for you?” Memory can serve us well in being a friend to others.

Father in heaven, help me to remember all the wonderful things You have done for me, and help me to not forget them, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
