Our grandson, Milo, likes to lead our mealtime prayer. We hear things like “thank you for arms, thank you for windows.” These odd things get mention because he has a unique praying style. He keeps his eyes open. He sees Papa at the table with him, and he thanks God for me. He sees Grammy, and says “thank You God for Grammy.” He sees our arms holding hands, and thanks God for our arms. He sees the windows, and mentions a thanks for them. He is a line of sight pray-er. Makes for interesting prayers. We never know what he will mention. No telling. I was thinking about grief, specifically those who lose spouses. I can imagine it is difficult to adjust to life without them. Imagine a pair of socks. If you lose one of them, the lone sock has to re-invent itself. Now it serves as a craft for a child, a polishing cloth for waxing the furniture, or as I use them, as a shoe polish applicator. I stick my hand in it, and rub it on. Or a pair of arms. I one day suddenly became aware of how much my left hands pairs with my right hand to do . . .everything! They open jars, they zip my coat, they button my shirt, they drive my car, they make our bed, they fold clothes, and on and on and on. One arm does not function the same anymore. It needs another in opposition to it to get work done. God in His infinite wisdom has given me a wife, and a very good one. I have a hard time imagining how it might be without her. Something completely different, for sure. Father in heaven, bless those who are learning to live without their mate, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
