1 Samuel 16:11-12 – “So he asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest, “Jesse answered. “He is tending sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
Passed over for a promotion, having a work project idea rejected, or not invited to a celebration are just some of the ways we can experience feeling overlooked. Today’s text suggests being overlooked is by no means only a contemporary problem. It describes how centuries ago David, a young shepherd boy, initially was not even being considered by his own family for a remarkable opportunity. Instead, his seven older brothers were presented to the prophet Samuel as prospects for becoming the next king of Israel while David was dutifully taking care of his father’s sheep. It was only after Samuel, at the LORD’s prompting, rejected all of the elder siblings; then David was brought in from the field and promptly anointed king.
This story is an encouragement to continue trusting the LORD and not losing hope if we are experiencing being overlooked. Other’s opinion of us is not a barrier for the LORD in His perfect timing to bring forth what He has planned for us. Today’s text shows even being placed in a remote pasture far away from any opportunities cannot thwart the LORD’s plans.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for steadfastly loving and caring about us. Help us remember to look to you for comfort and resolution whenever feeling we are being rejected and overlooked by others. In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
