| Proverbs 19:17 – “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” |
Generously giving financially or donating material goods are both impactful ways of extending kindness to the poor. However, today’s text suggests extending kindness is not limited to such actions but also may include helping those struggling with a scarcity mindset.
A scarcity mindset may be evident in someone who is feeling hopeless, disappointed, or overwhelmed. In such situations, kindness can be conveyed through speaking words of encouragement, praying with someone, and/or taking the time to listen to them. At times, those struggling with a scarcity mindset may conduct themselves in ways making interactions difficult. In such situations, we can choose to respond to harshly spoken and often accusatory words with kindness, graciousness and patience.
Choosing to respond with kindness can change an intense and chaotic atmosphere to one of peacefulness. Additionally, our acts of kindness can be ways to serve and glorify the LORD.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for all of the ways You extend kindness. You indeed are our provider and protector. Help us to remember extending kindness to others is a way of glorifying and honoring you. In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
