The Antidote for the “What Ifs” We Face

The Antidote for the "What Ifs" We Face
Civil War Cannon Firing
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 – “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

“What will become of me or my family if…..”. Many of us have had this or similar thoughts when facing stressful and uncertain times. During such times our first response is often to begin thinking about worst case scenarios and worrying over troubling events that could unfold. Our despair can grow as we begin dwelling on thoughts of how we have fallen short and failed therefore contributing to our current circumstances.

Today’s scripture suggests even after we begin living as Believers, we can still feel we are at war at times and are never immune to troubling thoughts. However, as we grow as Christians, it becomes more evident worrying and despair is not the response God intends for us.

Verse 4 in today’s reading tells us of the antidote, to fight these self-defeating and troubling thoughts with weapons that are not of this world. These weapons include the full armor of God described in Ephesians 6:13-17. So instead of dwelling on what could happen and how we are falling short, we begin thinking about putting on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, fitting our feet with the readiness from the gospel of peace and donning the helmet of salvation. As we are equipped with the full armor of God, we are able to capture every troubling thought and become victors over arguments and pretenses contradictory to how God can care and protect us regardless of the circumstance.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you for the assurance you provide all we need when experiencing troubling times and disturbing thoughts. Help us take every thought captive so instead of feeling as prisoners of our circumstances we experience the victory You readily provide. In Jesus’s Strong Name, Amen.
