Matthew 19:14 – but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Have you ever received an inheritance of any kind? Perhaps you treasure your grandfather’s shimmering pocket watch that is still a workhorse of a time piece. Maybe you were gifted your mom’s favorite pearl necklace she received from your dad for their wedding day.
It’s a wonderful thing to inherit special items from people we love. These items bring enjoyment and happy memories from a time gone by. But what about a more intangible inheritance? Sure, those actual items bring sentimental value and maybe even a bit of financial boost, but God’s Word tells us about the importance of a spiritual inheritance.
Recently, I came across a financial institution’s ad reminding parents and guardians the most important thing they can do for their children or anyone in their care is prepare to leave them a financial inheritance.
While managing money responsibly is always prudent, even Biblical, it’s also wise for parents to pass on a legacy of successfully handling money starting when the kids are young. However, for Christian parents, there’s something much more pressing than an impressive financial portfolio to leave their offspring.
Spiritual inheritance is priority for those of us who have young ones in our lives, but it doesn’t stop just because they’ve grown taller. Obviously, we need money to live, but to impart a spiritual inheritance means we teach our kids about Jesus’ sacrificial love for us through his death, resurrection, ascension and soon coming again. We model the joy of having Christ as our Lord as we participate in church and home worship of the Lord, praying both individually and as a family and exhibiting the fruits of the Spirit as we live out daily life. Yes, a healthy spiritual inheritance has benefits that are out of this world. Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to invest wisely in my children’s lives through showing them who you are through how I live, love, and give. Thank you for your rich daily blessings of love, forgiveness, food, shelter, family, friends and more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
