What makes the best instruments?

When I was a boy, I played trumpet. I had to switch because the horn my parents bought had been fixed with a piece of metal that changed the tone. It would never be in tone to be usable.

That’s why musicians care about the material out of which an instrument is made.

Paolo Fazioli does.

He makes pianos, exquisite pianos.

They are so good that it takes 3 years to build a piano.

And Herbie Hancock, the jazz musician, refuses to play on anything but a Fazioli piano.

What makes it so good?

He knew something that the famous violin maker knew. It was in the wood.

Both Stradivarius and Faziolo got their wood from a single forest.

The Vale de Fiemme, forty miles north of Venice, Italy looks like any other forest. Plenty of trees.

But something is different about these trees. The 200-year-old red spruce trees grow through the winter. This cold growth allows something spectacular to happen.

The wood resonates with the music.

So, these very expensive pianos have a sounding board made of this special red spruce because, as Fazioli says, the sound moves through the grain.

There is something about when the material sounds with the sounds of the master.

It sounds as he wants it to sound, perform in a way he wants it to perform.

When the lawyers came to Jesus, they tried to trick him into a mistake.

What is the greatest commandment? It apparently was the controversy of the day, batted about by rabbis.

Jesus was unfazed. He knew what it was. It was all about the material that carried the sound of God.

“And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)

Jesus was saying that the wood that carries the heart and soul of God is the one in tune with him in all ways.

When our lives resonate with that passion, that conviction, people hear and see something different.

Then, we are instruments in the hand of the Master.
