James 3:17 – “ But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

We typically may not consider showing mercy as indicative of wisdom. However, it is a hallmark of embracing wisdom from above for several reasons.

First, it is what we are commanded to do. Jesus instructed us “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). Additionally, the scriptures are filled with examples of Jesus extending mercy throughout the time of His earthly ministry. Three examples are: His response to the woman caught in adultery, accepting the woman at the well who had made multiple unfortunate choices, and His loving response towards His disciples who frequently misunderstood His teachings. At His crucifixion, Jesus cried out for mercy for all involved despite the mocking, betrayal, and horrible physical pain He endured.

The benefits of being merciful also make it a wise choice. We can avoid the emotional, spiritual and physiological pitfalls associated with holding onto anger, resentment and bitterness. Being merciful towards those who have hurt or distressed us helps us to walk in freedom and happiness. It can be an evangelistic tool, sparking a desire among those to whom we have shown mercy to become better acquainted with the One who taught us to walk in forgiveness and mercy.

Dear Heavenly Father, words can never express our gratitude for the mercy You so lovingly pour out on us. Help us remember that when we choose to be merciful towards others, we are choosing to exemplify heavenly wisdom. In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
