Galatians 5:25 – “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” |
From a young age I have always loved parades, especially the marching bands. It amazed me that the members could march in straight lines and play music at the same time. Keeping in perfect step, making intricate formations – it involved a huge amount of skill and teamwork.
I was excited to be in our school band when I got older. Our band director had a love for parade marching, so many of our weekends were spent traveling to nearby towns and participating in festivals and holiday celebrations. The thing that made us successful as a band was how well we stayed in formation. We were acutely aware of keeping in line, not just on the straight roads but on curves and when turning corners.
During band practice each day we would go outside and march on a side street, turning corners one after another. He wanted it to be second nature for us when we got to the next parade, so we could look confident in front of the crowds or judges if we were at a competition. And he was right – the more we practiced, the better we got.
Walking in faith is much the same way. Being part of God’s family means walking daily with the Spirit as my guide. Keeping in step with him will help me when life throws curves at me, or I find it is time to turn a corner. I’m certainly not perfect, but with daily practice I am becoming more confident as I go down the road of life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, keep me close to you, and in step with you. Guide me during the straight times of life as well as the difficult curves. Amen
