My wife and I have been introduced to a non-profit group, “To Be Like Me”. We learned about it through our jobs. We are both employed at Richardson ISD. She sent several classes of children there on field trips. I approved the accounting code on the spending request. I was curious and went to their website to see what it was all about. They teach people what it is like to have a long list of disabilities. How to empathize with the disabled instead of staring at them silently. They are currently all booked up with school field trips.
My wife got us into a community meeting yesterday afternoon. She has a contact at the non-profit, and that relationship garnered us an invitation. We were in a session led by a blind man and a woman born with no leg. Both had interesting stories. After they spoke, we had a chance to ask questions. The blind man, Blake, worked on Dallas radio stations for a while. He has a great radio voice. He has been blind from a very early age, but had sight at birth. He has no memory of sight. Another man, David, has a pretty severe stutter. But it disappears when he sings or whispers. Some had dyslexia, some were autistic. One woman lost her leg in an auto accident. One woman was born with no joints. After they told their story, I found myself forgetting that they were any different than I. I felt like we were the same in so many ways. Our fears and hopes were similar.
This world is full of physical decay. Our bodies are all slowly wearing out. Won’t heaven be wonderful as we can lay this body down and receive a wonderful new body. Like angels we will be. Father in heaven, thank You for preparing a wonderful place, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
