Many times in my life I made assumptions about how someone felt about me, or what their words actually meant. Instead of asking the person directly, I let my emotions and imagination run wild, and my feelings were hurt by perceived negative comments. I let these assumptions cloud future interactions between us. This is even more common now with emails and text messages – it is all too easy to misread the sender’s intentions and assume the worst. Without facial expressions and body language, it is easy to get the wrong messages. These messes could easily have been cleared up if I had just asked for clarification.
I think we do the same type of things with God. We misread his lessons for us or jump to conclusions if our prayers are not answered on our timeline. We make assumptions based on past experiences or biases. We harbor hurt feelings and mistrust. But God is the one with full knowledge of our situations and has the answers to our questions. We need to listen more closely to him.
Prayer: Dear Father, help me to seek your wisdom and not jump to conclusions based on my past experiences or emotions. You hold my future in your hands, and I desire to know more about your plans for my life. Speak to me through scripture and the teachings of others. Help me to hear your voice clearly so there are no misunderstandings. Amen.
