Isaiah 58:11 – “The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.” |
I have always loved maps and globes and learning about geography. From a very early age, I remember sitting next to my dad in the car and looking at the folded maps he kept in the glove box to figure out where we were and how far we were from our destination. He taught me directions, what the different colors and symbols on the maps meant, and the ever-important skill of how to refold the map when I was done! He also taught me to read highway signs and the importance of mile markers. And many years later I taught those skills to my daughter as well.
I recall one particular trip when my family was on vacation and driving across Nebraska during the hottest week on record. Our car had air conditioning, but dad didn’t like to turn it on. All seven of us in the car were suffering in the heat and cramped quarters. Finally, he gave in to our pleadings and agreed to stop at the next town for ice cream and cold drinks. He had me find the nearest town on the map and we counted down the miles until we could get out of the crowded car, stretch our legs, and cool off.
God works in much the same way. When we are hot and tired, He guides us to places of His refreshment. When we are lost and don’t know where to turn, He teaches us to recognize the signs around us that point us in the direction we should go. And like my earthly father, He patiently teaches skills that will help us guide others in the future.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father – thank you for guiding us when we are unsure where to go, and for leading us to quiet streams of renewal. Thank you also for providing signs that point us toward you. Thank you for being our ever-present help when we need you. Amen
