Time Changes – Psalm 90:4-6

Time Changes
Grasshopper (Orthoptera)
Psalm 90:4-6 – “For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.”

We still change our clocks for Daylight Savings time and then “fall back” to regular time in October.

It is interesting what time changes do to us. Those who love statistics tell us this is the most dangerous day of the year.

More people have traffic accidents due to foggy minds.

Heart attacks happen more often on this day than any other day of the year. Perhaps it is the stress of the change.

For me, I don’t care for it because last week, the sun was coming up as I did this program. Now, I will have to wait an extra hour.

But when we have to reset clocks, it forces us to confront time.

In 2008, Time Magazine named a strange new clock as one of its 50 best inventions of the year.

An Englishman named John Taylor developed a mechanical timepiece he called the Corpus Clock.

It looked like a large golden serving plate with a large insect on top.

When you got closer, you noticed something strange about this clock—it had no hands.

It had only three dots of blue light.

One dot circled the edge every second.

The other dots were positioned where hands would point on a normal clock.

But the insect—it was described as a “hideous grasshopper.”

As the clock moved, it appeared that the grasshopper moved with the dot representing minutes. Its mouth would open and then snapped closed.

It was Taylor’s way of showing time is being gobbled up with each second that passes.

We all have two senses.

One is how slow time can move. I have a granddaughter who, for two years, has been looking forward to kindergarten, which seemed so far away.

But the other perspective is how fast it moves. For me, that granddaughter was just born, and her mother will register her for kindergarten in the next week or two. Where has time gone? Has the grasshopper eaten it?

We need the reminder of how precious life really is.

Moses recorded a prayer that ended up in Israel’s songbook. Inserted between the praises and hallelujahs is a stark statement of life.

“For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.” (Psalm 90:4–6)

Life is short. It moves with a ferocious speed. So, we need to take care of today. Do what you must. Help who you can. Cement your relationship with God. Because by this time tomorrow, today will have passed. Take care of today…it is a gift.
