| Matthew 7:24-25 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. “ |
During a recent dental check-up, I asked the dental hygienist if she could tell the difference between those flossing regularly and those having a less diligent approach to this vital oral routine. While giving the expected answer, she provided an additional tidbit concerning those taking a more lackadaisical approach. Sometimes such individuals, prior to their appointment, will begin flossing with such vigor it leaves their gums in rather raw condition.
Although I chuckled at her answer, it later made me realize that whether it is towards our approach to oral hygiene or our relationship with Jesus, inconsistency is never a good idea. If we have not built our lives on the solid foundation of Jesus, we are vulnerable to experiencing raw and negative feelings anytime troubling situations emerge. Fears can overwhelm us, and indecision and despair can become crippling. Our foundation can be built through a solid practice of daily prayer, being in His Word, and remaining in fellowship with other believers. Being consistent in our practices keeps us firmly planted on the solid rock foundation of Jesus, even when storms threaten to batter and toss us about.
Dear Heavenly Father, forgive us when we allow troubles, distractions or even busyness to distance us from the only true foundation we have, which is Jesus. Help us to remain consistent in such practices as prayer and being in Your Word so we can remain standing on the firm foundation You provide for us. In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
