| Luke 12:15 – “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” |
Some believe money makes the world go round. The evidence is hard to argue with.
House prices are staggering, and people pay whatever is asked. Economists tell us the more we spend, the sounder the dollar. And nearly everyone assumes that a little more money would solve their problems.
But have you considered what money cannot do?
Money can buy medicine, but not health. A house, but not a home. Companionship, but not friends. Entertainment, but not happiness. Food, but not an appetite. A bed, but not sleep. A crucifix, but not a Savior. The good life, but not the eternal one.
For all its power, money cannot give us what we truly need.
In Luke 12, a man came to Jesus with a demand. He wanted the Master to instruct his brother to divide the family inheritance fairly. Wherever a will is involved, it is never a pretty sight.
Jesus refused. Instead, he told a story about a successful farmer whose crops exceeded all expectations. The man tore down old silos to build larger ones. Life was good. He planned on many comfortable years ahead. Then, in the night, God came to him with a single word: tonight, your soul is required of you.
Money had given him false security. And then Jesus added this:
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15, NIV)
Life is not about what we own but who we are.
So, take a quiet moment and examine your values. What is it, exactly, that money cannot give you?
