Possible
What is impossible?
If you would have asked that question a hundred years ago, you might hear these answers:
Man going to the Moon.
A man being able to run a mile in four minutes.
Cars that drive themselves.
But then, reflect on the answers.
We are more than half a century since Neil Armstrong left footprints on the moon.
The current world record in the mile is 3:43.
Cars are in production that indeed navigate and stop when they see things coming.
It was a subject George Dantzig never considered.
Dantzig was a world-famous mathematician working in the field of statistics.
In 1939, he enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of California at Berkeley, where he studied under Jerzy Neyman.
One day, he entered the classroom early and noticed two problems on the chalkboard.
He assumed they were homework, so he copied them in his notebook to work on later.
He did the homework and solved the problems, although they seemed more challenging than usual.
He handed them in to Professor Neyman and apologized for them being late.
Neyman looked at them and was astonished. The professor turned to Dantzig and said, “Those are two of the most famous unsolved problems in statistics, and you have solved them.”
When Dantzig was going to write his dissertation, Neyman told him just to submit the two problems and that it was enough.
What seemed to be unsolvable could be solved.
It is a problem faced by all.
Life hands us difficult circumstances in which we believe nothing can be done.
In Matthew 19, Jesus presented his disciples with a conundrum. “It is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than a camel to go through the eye of a needle.”
Who then can be saved? If the best of society has no chance, what hope is there?
But Jesus said, “With man this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.” (Matt 19:26)
With God, all things are possible.
The sick can be healed.
The downhearted can be cheered.
The hopeless can find hope.
Look at your own life. Where are your impossibilities? And then remember, God can solve the unsolvable.
