“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”
That common cliché’ is rarely backed by moral excellence. Vegas memories are routinely sealed. Truth be told, that’s probably for the best.
But is there such a thing as church like Vegas?
I’m not referring to churches in Vegas. A good friend of mine serves a church in Las Vegas and blesses countless lives. Believe it or not, there are many faithful Christ followers in “Sin City.”
But what about this line? “What happens at church stays at church.”
Could those words be true?
On Sunday, the Scriptures are studied. The Lord is praised. Worship is lifted. Prayers are prayed. Fellowship is enjoyed. Encouragement is shared.
And then it’s over. Life goes back to normal. Church came and went.
But what about Monday through Saturday? Does the manifold wisdom of God permeate into the world through the church (Ephesians 3: 10), or is it sealed until next Sunday?
Doctrine isn’t meant just to be taught; it’s also meant to be lived. Worship is more than a “set.” Sermons are to be preached well beyond the pulpit. Bible study should continue long after Bible class ends.
A daily pursuit of Jesus doesn’t end in a Sunday sanctuary. A genuine walk with Jesus isn’t confined to a building.
Does what happen at church stay at church? Or does the church (the people) bless the community in which they reside?
Jesus wants His people (the church) to be His ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5: 20), not His undercover agents. Service to our Savior was never meant to be top secret.
What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but don’t let what happens in church stay in church.
