Cemeteries are full of people who made big plans.
That sobering truth drips with reality. If you have thirty minutes to spare, take a quiet stroll through your local cemetery. Examine the graves and document what you see. Reflect on the lives they represent.
Tombstones tell only a fraction of a much larger story. A person’s legacy can’t be confined to a date of entry and departure, but a common theme echoes through rows of graves. Everyone believes they have more time. However, death is no respecter of persons.
A cemetery has a way of reminding us of two important truths.
#1: A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Wish
Graves house many books that were going to be written. Businesses that were going to be started. Retirements that were going to be enjoyed. Trips that were going to be taken. Memories that were going to be made. Lives that were going to be changed. But many dreams never move beyond good intentions.
It’s important to have big aspirations. God plants visions within our heart. But dreams require stewardship. Stop postponing for a day that may never come. Time is a gift, not a guarantee.
#2: A Soul Without a Savior Isn’t Secure
James, the younger brother of Jesus reminds us that we’re a “mist.” (James 4: 14) The brevity of life should cause us to think beyond business, travel, and investments. It should demand our attention as to where we stand with God. As costly as it is not to capitalize on your personal aspirations, it’s much more costly not to surrender to Jesus as your personal Savior.
