Matthew 25:23 – “Well done, good and faithful servant;” |
Saturday, I had much to get done. I got up at 5:15am to get myself ready for a half day of professional development classes hosted by my employer. I needed to eat breakfast, stop by the office to pick up my district laptop, fill up my truck with gas.
I had to put my guitar in the truck because I told my mother I would bring it with me. After my morning classes, I was going to Fort Worth to see her. I would pick up lunch as I got close to her apartment so we could eat together.
Russell and I are working on 5 songs to perform at a Spring Party for our ‘prime timers’ at church. I wanted to perform those songs for her in a private concert. The songs, in their order, were “California Dreamin” (Mamas and the Papas), “Country Roads” (John Denver), “If You Could Read My Mind” (Gordon Lightfoot), “Landslide” (Fleetwood Mac), and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” (Bob Dylan). I have them fairly performance ready. The only thing missing was Russell’s flute and bass guitar.
As I began singing and playing for her, my mind had trouble staying in the moment. After all, 58 years ago, I received my first guitar, and she bought me a chord book to help me get a start in playing. All these years later, she is hearing the results of the many hours of practice. Her, 92, and me 68.
In many ways, our life is a performance of things we have practiced. When we practice honoring our folks, it fits in with honoring Jesus. God spoke from heaven so that all could hear “This is My beloved son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him.” Jesus said on the cross: “It is finished.” The job His Father gave Him was done, and done well. He did it all for us! Because of that, I have hope to hear Him say one day to me, “Well done, my good and faithful servant!”
Father in heaven, thank You for Your Son, Jesus, in His name, Amen!
