A Shared Laugh, Good Medicine – Proverbs 17:22

A Shared Laugh, Good Medicine
Mother and daughters laughing together
Proverbs 17:22- “A cheerful heart is good medicine.”

My wife invited Benjamin to come tonight for dinner. She fixed crockpot roast, carrots, potatoes, and onions with garlic knots bread, green beans, fruit salad, and pumpkin pie. Good food lures them home. Benjamin arrived, and while we were waiting on Jackson to get home, Mary Linda told us about how she ran into a long time friend in the restroom at Sam’s Club.

While they were catching up, my wife reminded her of the time this woman’s husband went after a snake. My wife was a sponsor for a 5th grade 3 day long field trip to Camp Grady Spruce. During an indoor nature lecture, the moms began noticing a snake along one wall, on the floor. Tom, a veterinarian, snuck up to it and grabbed it by the tail. He flung it into the middle of the crowd. It was plastic. We laughed about that.

Jackson got home and we sat down for dinner. Mary Linda was retelling how she went up and down the aisles of the grogery store, (Tom Thumb) and noticed she was stepping in pancake syrup. The source of it was her own basket which had two or three kids in it. She can laugh about it now. And another time she had the three boys in a dressing room at Dillards, when Jackson had a blowout diaper, and she cleaned him up right there on the floor of the dressing room.

And then we laughed about her sending Grant and Benjamin into the men’s room together (for safety). Grant returned alone. “He’s singing loud. He was hollering for toilet paper. And he’s talking to the man in the next stall.”

And the incident I missed, but heard so often, I think I was present. Benjamin was in kindergarten soccer, playing goal keeper. The action was all at the other goal. He got bored and began swinging from the crossbar. As his feet swung back, his cleats got tangled in the net. He fell to the ground and the net came down on top of him. The coach, an Australian, began shouting instructions to him. Some parents went to rescue him.

It does my heart good to be merry and laugh.

Father in heaven, thank You for light moments in our lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
