Anxiety – Proverbs 12:25

Anxiety
Encouraging therapist talks with young woman

Proverbs 12:25 – “Anxiety weights down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”

There are many times when it is perfectly normal to feel anxious – starting a new school or job, moving to a new city, learning some discouraging health news, having more month than paycheck. All of us struggle at times, and it’s easy to feel isolated and alone with our fears.

But our verse today tells us to be kind to one another. A gentle word, a smile, and showing interest in another person’s situation can work wonders to ease their anxiety. But in order to do this we need to really SEE the other person and recognize their struggles. Perhaps that means putting down our cell phones when we are with other people or turning off the TV or gaming system. Maybe it means asking gentle questions and offering a sympathetic ear without judgment. A tender show of concern could mean the world to them. But what if WE are the one struggling? There is no shame in asking for help. Taking our anxieties to God in prayer is the best solution, as he will always express his love and concern for us. As I Peter 5:7 tells us, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Prayer: Dear Father, help me to be more aware of those who are struggling and to reach out to them during their time of anxiety. And when I am feeling anxious, help me remember to bring my concerns to you. Amen
