Matthew 10:42 – “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
The British holiday, Martinmas, is celebrated each November 11th. It’s named for St. Martin deTours, a fourth century Roman soldier who had a dream that changed his life forever. Legend says while traveling on horseback one day he encountered a poor beggar at the city gates of Amiens. Having compassion on the poor man, Martin cut his own red woolen cloak in two and gave a portion to the poor man. The next night in a dream, Martin saw Christ wearing the red cloak surrounded by angels. In his dream, the Lord asked Martin if he recognized the cloak which, of course, he did. Because of the dream, Martin became convinced he should dedicate his life to the Lord which he did, thus beginning a quiet life of dedication and service.
We may not see a beggar at the city gates while riding horseback, give him a portion of our coat, or dream of Christ wearing that coat, but we are surrounded by opportunities to give to those in need. There is no shortage of chances to give whether to help hurricane victims with monetary or physical donations or the elderly who would appreciate a hot meal, or donating food to a local food pantry, or dropping some coins into a red kettle at Christmas or visiting a shut-in who would cherish a visit. There are dozens and dozens more ways. Take time to look – really look – around. You know, it might even be someone is just needing a really good hug and yes – even a cup of water.
The holidays will quickly be upon us with even more wonderful opportunities to bless someone by selflessly giving. Don’t wait to demonstrate God’s love to others – reach out – by whatever means or method – to let someone know they’re seen and you’re there to help.
God is such a good, generous, giving God. How can we be any less when He blesses us so richly.
Dear God: What an amazing God you are! Thank you for the opportunities you place in our path to help others so that we can be a physical manifestation of your love on earth. Open our eyes to see and welcome the opportunities before us. We love you, Lord. Amen.
