Psalm 94:18 – “I cried out, ‘I am slipping!’ but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me.” |
I remember trying to learn to ice skate when I was a young girl. The farm where we lived had a small creek along the west side, and the harsh Iowa winters usually ensured that it would freeze solid enough for us to skate. After dad inspected it and was sure it was safe, we would spend most of one afternoon clearing all the snow from the ice.
The next day we would bundle up and lace up the skates that mom picked up at Goodwill. My older siblings were good skaters, but my lack of athletic ability was obvious as I struggled to stay upright. I spent a lot of time sitting on the cold ice instead of gliding gracefully like my sisters and older brother could.
My dad loved to skate as well, and I remember him coming to me and holding my hand as he patiently taught me the tricks I needed to be successful. Many times, his strong arms caught me as I started to tumble and fall. Eventually my ankles got used to balancing on thin blades, and with the confidence I gained by having my father by my side, I was able to succeed.
God is always there to help us when we fall during life’s slippery times – health problems, financial concerns, natural disasters – all we need to do is call to him in faith and he will catch us with his strong arms. Let him support you and guide you while you build your faith and confidence in living for him.
Dear Father, thank you for the many times you have caught me as I was slipping on life’s dangerous roads. You never take your eyes off me, and I know you will always come when I call. Help me to stay aware of your presence in my life each day. Amen.
