Titus 3:2 – “Be still and know that I am God” |
Many years ago, yet it still crosses my mind, I was greatly troubled by the news story of 2 parents and 16 year old son who drowned trying to save their dog on a beach in California. I really took notice of the story because the place where it happened resembled my favorite place on earth, the beach at Oceanside, Oregon.
The horrible incident happened because an unexpected 10 foot wave came and swept away the family dog while they were playing frisbee. The ironic part of the sad outcome is that the boy lost his life trying to save the dog and the parents lost their lives trying to save the boy. Later, the dog was found safe on the beach as he swam his way back to safety.
It reminded me of how we mess up things every time we try to fix them. We anguish about what to say or do to try and make things better when what we really need to do is let go and let God. On many a day I am sure he is looking down saying, “Are you done? If you’ll move out of the way I will now take care of this for you. I’ve been waiting for you to get out of the way.”
Think about the stories in Scripture where folks tried to help and got a terrible result. For example Abraham and Sarah trying to help God with the promised child. Uzzah who tried to stop the Ark of the Covenant from falling. These had disastrous results.
Many times we need to stand back and let God take care of things.
