From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture repeatedly portrays God seated upon His throne. Whether described in literal visions or rich imagery, His authority is unmatched, His sovereignty unquestioned, and His rule shared with no one.
The prophet Isaiah beheld the Lord high and exalted upon His throne. Stephen, as he gazed into heaven, saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God. In Revelation, elders and angels fall before the throne in ceaseless worship, declaring God’s majesty. Even today, in our worship gatherings, we speak of “entering the throne room of God” as a way of acknowledging His greatness and honor.
A throne is a place for a King…and only a King.
Yet how often do we treat God’s throne like a loveseat? As if God will scoot over and invite us to co-rule our lives together?
How foolish.
God has no plans to vacate His seat. He doesn’t need our help ruling the world He created. He neither seeks nor accepts a Vice President, Congress, or Supreme Court to maintain checks and balances. He is more than qualified and dignified for the task.
James and John were guilty of “loveseat theology.” Through their own request, or possibly through the prompting of their mother, they sought places of honor at Jesus’ right and left hand (Matthew 20:20–24; Mark 10:35–40). Jesus clarified that not even He had the authority to administer those appointments.
My friend, stop trying to run your life. Stop thinking that you’re in control.
We’re never more than one heartbeat away from death.
Let God be the King and you be the subject. Don’t try to sit in a seat that was never designed for you.
Loveseats were made for couples, not the Creator.
Rest in the confidence that the King already reigns. |
