Psalms 138:6 – “Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.

Have you ever felt insignificant or invisible? Have you been in a situation (whether at work or school or church) where you felt no one even noticed you were there? Lowly means “of low status or importance.” How many of us have felt that way as children, or now as adults? I am a relatively shy person and tend to hold back when entering new situations. Taking leadership roles at work has been tough for me, but I have gotten a bit better at it over the years. Social situations, however, continue to be difficult and I usually sit on the sidelines until I am more comfortable, or someone reaches out to me first. I never wanted a solo in band or choir – I was perfectly content to provide harmony in the background. But the innate need to feel seen or heard is still there, as it is for all of us. Today’s verse reminds us that God sees each of us, even those of us in the background. We don’t need to be at the front of the stage or the CEO of a business for him to recognize our presence. Even from his ‘exalted’ position in heaven he is intimately aware of us as individuals and the challenges we face. We are not insignificant or invisible to him – he loves and cares for us all.
