King David’s life was filled with highs and lows. He experienced many successes on the battlefield, with victory over Goliath as a highlight. However, his life was often in danger as he was hunted down by a jealous King Saul and spent years in hiding. God had plans for his future, but they were hard to see when he was living in exile in the mountains. David felt alone and abandoned by the God he had committed to serve.
How easy it is for us to feel the same way – when our child is sick or injured and the doctors are not optimistic, when a friend or spouse has betrayed us, or when there has been the loss of a job or home due to circumstances out of our control. We cry out to God and wonder if He even hears us. Deuteronomy 31:6-8 states “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” God is at work in ways we cannot always see and working for our good. There is a popular song “Trust His Heart” which contains these lines, “God is too wise to be mistaken, God is too good to be unkind. So when you don’t understand, When you don’t see His plan, When you can’t trace His hand, Trust His Heart”
Heavenly Father, please help us to remember that you are always with us, even if we do not immediately see or feel your presence. Help us to trust your promises to never leave or forsake us. We know that you love us and want only your best for us – help us to not be afraid but to see your hand at work around us. Amen
