Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the world.” |
We were greeters at our church yesterday. We open the door, and give a friendly hello to everyone as they enter. Mike S. arrived and said, “I got great service from my Calloway’s connection yesterday.” He told us this because it was our son who he had spoken with. He is a plant specialist (assistant manager) for the nursery. He has been there 5 years now, and has picked up a good deal of expertise in that time, just by paying attention, and thanks to a good memory. My life is full of such people who give me great service. Saturday afternoon, my wife and I ran to get groceries. I pushed the cart to make things go quicker and easier for her. We wheeled past a man in his 60s, close to my age. I immediately recognized the face. But it took me a minute to place him. Then it hit me. “Del’s!” This hole in the wall hamburger place close to where I work. He is the face I see each time I go in there. He takes my order and gets it right, always friendly. Del’s is one of those places that has local flavor and lots of personality. And it is always packed. A place that Texas Country Reporter should feature if they haven’t already. Great food, and they make their own root beer, served in frosted mugs. “Aren’t you the manager at Del’s?” I said it like I had just run into Tom Hanks and was wanting an autograph. He smiled. Then I told him that “I am a regular customer. I work a block from your place.” He exclaimed, “Yes!” I asked, “How long have you been there?” He smiled big, and told me that he bought it 20 years ago and business keeps growing. He is one of those guys who makes my life a little brighter. Jesus said that we are the light of the world. I hope I am doing my job. I can see it when others are! Father in heaven, help us to light the path, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
