The 1950’s launched many phenomena still trending in the 2020’s. Fads like “fast food” and “suburbs.” Some of the crazes survived like greasy burgers. Some of them vanished like polyester.
But in the “Garden State” of New Jersey in 1952, “Singing Shoulders” first appeared on the scene. By the end of the decade, the whole country followed suit.
What were “Singing Shoulders?” You might call them, “Rumble Strips.” They both reverberate when cars veer off roads.
“Singing Shoulders” make a loud “hum” that awakens sleepy drivers. “Rumble Strips” jar teeth in drowsy mouths.
According to various Departments of Transportation, “Singing Shoulders” decrease accidents on major interstates by as much as 70%. From all indications, they serve a critical, even life-saving purpose.
Did you know that God paved “Singing Shoulders” into our lives?
Physically, some simply call it a “conscience.” Or “Fight or Flight” neurotransmitters that signal when danger is ahead.
Relationally, God provides dear friends or wise counsel to shout at us when we are off course. Sometimes it takes people close to us to decipher what is in us.
And spiritually, God provides believers with the “Holy Spirit”—the best “Singing Shoulder” available. The Holy Spirit is not the “JV God” or the “third wheel” of the Godhead. He convicts us when we are wrong. He claims us when we are lonely. He strengthens us when we are weak. He guides us when we are lost. He comforts us when we are sad. He intercedes for us when we are speechless. He empowers us when we are timid. He is God, in us.
The “Singing Shoulder” keeps your car on the road, but the Holy Spirit keeps your life out of the ditch.
God has powerful ways to get your attention, so listen to Him.
It might save your life. |
