Ephesians 6:15 – “And having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.”
When Paul wrote to the Ephesians about the armor of God and mentioned the shoes of peace, people probably would have thought of the studded sandals Roman soldiers wore at the time called caligae (KAL-ih-guy ). Caligae were specially designed footwear made for both marching and fighting. Caligae were heavy duty, thick-soled work boots with hobnailed soles. They were typically worn by the lower ranks of cavalrymen and foot soldiers, but they were sometimes worn by centurions too.
These caligae sandals were both practical and functional. They were open on either side so air could filter through. This prevented blisters and made marching easier. Their hobnailed soles prevented the soldier from slipping and gave him sure footing in battle which was essential.
God provides Christians with spiritual armor to wear for battle which includes the shoes of peace. Just like the hobnails on the bottom of the caligae, our spiritual shoes give us a strong grip so we, too, can stand firm. The hobnails give us traction during uncertain times. They keep us moving forward and prevent us from slipping backward. These spiritual caligae give us a strong, dependable foundation during times of battle when our world shakes and things seem so uncertain. Stand firm in the caligae of peace that are part of your spiritual armor and know that God has you. He’s protecting you, and He’s keeping you safe.
Dear God: Thank you that in uncertain times or times of spiritual battle, you offer Your peace – a peace that surpasses all understanding. Help us to walk boldly and make our feet ready to follow you into spiritual battle, our hearts steady in service to you and our mission clear to go forth in your Name. In Christ’s powerful name. Amen.
