| Galatians 6:7 – “…a man reaps what he sows.” |
“God is not your busboy.”
That unusual line reeled me in like a bass. At first blush, I didn’t know what to think. Initially it felt filthy, if not blasphemous.
And then I pondered it some more. After some deliberation I said, “I like it.”
Unfortunately, humanity treats God like its busboy. It happens all the time.
We make a big mess and then expect God to clean up behind us. We pridefully wait for Him to do simple chores we’re more than capable of doing.
To be clear, God is our Owner. God is our General Manager. God is our Master Chef. He’s the only source of divine forgiveness. Some sticky situations only He can make smooth. Without His grace we are lost.
But God is not our busboy.
Choices have consequences. Sin has side effects.
Even though we’re undeserving recipients of God’s unfathomable grace, some messes take time to manage. We made the mess so we must grab the mop. Paul reminded the churches of Galatia “…a man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6: 7, NIV)
We’re never too “important” to say, “I’m sorry.” We’re never too “holy” to handwash the hurt we caused. Or suds the dishes we dirtied. Or pick up the glasses we shattered.
Fixing up is God’s job. Cleaning up is our job.
God is not our busboy.
And the next time you see a busboy working hard at a restaurant, kindly tell him “Thank you!”
