John 8:58 – “before Abraham was, I AM.” |
Yesterday was a special day. I became a grandpa for the second time, and to a little girl. Sage.
I thought back to when I was becoming a father for the second time. The miracle of birth! And it is. I asked the labor and delivery nurse “What causes the baby to take the first breath?” Her answer: “Very mechanical process. The ribcage is compressed and constricted in the birth canal. The baby cannot inhale. Once the chest cavity is delivered, the ribs spring out to their natural, un-constricted size, and like a bellows, the lungs suck in.” God’s design.
Each time I study His creation, I am amazed. And just to think that 9 months ago, there was nothing, and now a living soul. God forms each one of us and plants an eternal soul in us. Each unique.
I can grasp the concept of a being that begins life and is eternal from that point, but I have trouble getting a grip on a God who simply “is”. The “I AM”. Without tense. He exists outside of the bounds of time.
I also yesterday finished the book “Bonhoeffer”. It made me think about death. It is full of death. A time in history when men often contemplated it. For it hounded them daily. We all shall die, unless Jesus returns while we are still living. The best thing for us is to live ready to die. It is hard to fear death when you have already died.
Father in heaven, thank You for waiting for us on the other side, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
